Many people in the religious world think: "The Lord Jesus saying on the cross 'It is finished' proves that God's work of saving mankind was finished. Simply by believing in the Lord, we are forgiven of sin, justified by faith, and saved by grace. When the Lord comes, He will bring us up into the kingdom of heaven. He can't possibly do any more work of salvation." Is this view in line with the facts of God's work? Then what did the Lord Jesus mean by saying “It is finished”? Let's recall for a while: In the late Age of Law, mankind had been corrupted deeply and all of them couldn't hold on to the law, facing the danger of being punished to death by the law. The Lord Jesus, God's incarnation, was nailed to the cross to redeem us from sins and forgive us our sins, in order to take on our sins. Because of the redemption of the Lord Jesus, we can get rid of condemnation by the law. Once we sin again, we're qualified to pray to the Lord to repent and confess so that we can enjoy the grace of the Lord. This is the result achieved by the Lord Jesus' redemptive work. Just as the Bible said, "But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was on Him; and with His stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5). So "It's finished" said by the Lord Jesus just means the work of redeeming mankind was finished but doesn't mean that the whole work of God saving mankind was finished. God says, "At the time Jesus’ work was the redemption of all mankind. The sins of all who believed in Him were forgiven; as long as you believed in Him, He would redeem you; if you believed in Him, you were no longer a sinner, you were relieved of your sins. This is what it meant to be saved, and to be justified by faith. Yet in those who believed, there remained that which was rebellious and opposed God, and which still had to be slowly removed. Salvation did not mean man had been completely gained by Jesus, but that man was no longer of sin, that he had been forgiven his sins: Provided you believed, you would never more be of sin." Clip Two: Christ Is God Incarnate For the last two thousand years, although believers in the Lord have known that the Lord Jesus is Christ, that He is God in the flesh, no one has been able to understand the mysteries of the truth pertaining to what God's incarnation truly is and how we should know the incarnate God. This is why, when Almighty God of the last days became flesh to come do His work of judgment, some people treated Him as if He were just a regular person and refused to accept Almighty God's work of the last days. People are very likely to lose God's salvation of the last days this way. It is evident that understanding the truth of incarnation is critical for welcoming the Lord's return. Clip Three: How Pastors and Elders Treat the Return of the Lord In many people’s minds pastors and elders serve the Lord, are very familiar with the Bible, and often interprete it to others. So they should be able to recognize the Lord and lead the believers to welcome Him when He returns. However, what has been the attitude of pastors and elders toward the Lord’s return? The Lord has returned in the last days, uttering many truths and doing the work of judgment. It should stand to reason that since pastors and elders serve the Lord, are so well-versed in the Bible, and frequently interpret it for others, they should be able to recognize the coming of the Lord and be able to lead believers to welcome Him. But how do these pastors and elders actually treat the return of the Lord? Source From: The Gospel Messenger |
